Public speaking can be one of the most daunting tasks for people. There are few things more terrifying than standing in front of a group of people and addressing them. In this blog post, we’re going to talk about how you can become an excellent public speaker by following these 5 steps!
Step1. Don’t overthink your speech before giving it, and speak from the heart.
Step2.Remember to pause between sentences so that people get time to process what you’re saying; this will help them stay focused on you instead of their own thoughts or distractions in the room.
Step3. Be sure not to say “um or ok” too much as another way of improving your speaking skills may be going off-script with an impromptu comment about something happening outside our window today, like how hot it is out here; right now!
Step4. Picking up on the audience’s mood is a great way to improve your public speaking. A study by Harvard Business School found that speakers who addressed their audiences in a tone of voice and body language similar to theirs were more successful at influencing them than those with less rapport. If you are an extroverted speaker, use words like “I’m excited” or “we’re awesome.” While if you are introverted, it may be better for making eye contact with members of the crowd while talking as opposed to using assertive arm gestures, which cause listeners’ anxiety levels to rise.
Step 5. If you want to be a better public speaker, take these steps: start with shorter speeches and gradually lengthen them over time. Speak slowly at first (you can work on speed later). Try practising your speech below the lectern or in front of an empty room before going on stage or Zoom. Test out what makes people laugh by giving it different intonations–people will appreciate this more than they might realize!
